scenes from a rearview mirror

a middle aged couple. the uneasiness apparent between the two even from the vehicle in front. the man lights a cigarette and inhales with the force of a hurricane. he exhales the smoke through a small crack in the window.

the women sits next to him. silent. pulling tight inside herself waiting for the tension to break or the storm to restart. she's wearing dark glasses so he can't see her eyes. she turns to look up and out the window and the trace of a tears slides down her cheek.

the man says, "fuckin idiot driver's" to break some of the tension, but he still wears his anger on his face. years of unabsolved tension and years of disenchantment are drawn into his weary face. he blows out more smoke after another forceful drag on his cigarette.

i turn left to go home, they drive on the moment still going.

i was told today that i will be getting my electrician's apprenticeship. i start school in january. to say i'm excited would be a small understatement. i was just starting to feel like i was caught in this deep rut that was never going to end. now i can see a future and now my life has strategy.
